You Should Listen: The Meadows Brothers “Home Recordings/Demos”

On the Bandcamp page of The Meadows Brothers is a recording called “Home Recordings/Demos”…tracks which I believe became the disc available at live shows called “Homegrown”. Very fitting I do suppose. With a very organic and raw feel that captures their vibrant energy and has a very live feel to it, the 4 tracks are a great intro to what these boys do and do so damn well. With a mix of untempo country tinged tunes and softer ballads putting the delicate intertwine of their vocal harmonies on full display, this is a glimpse into The Meadows Brothers and the strength of a chemistry that can only exist between siblings.

Kicking off the collection is the song that every roots artist wishes they came up with the hook for… “A Train Makes a Sad, Sad Sound”. The harmonica mimics the sound of a train whistle to perfection, the guitar manages to create a landscape that sounds much bigger than just one instrument, and the fervor in Ian and Dustin’s voices is something of greatness.

The second tune, Julieanna takes it down a bit and shows the softer side of the fellas. With a keen focus on the subtle harmonies that are just right and a ballad-esque to a lady, this song is a gorgeous testament to the boys ability to be rowdy or exhibit beauty in their performances.

‘Ghosts’ and ‘Lonesome Pine Company’ both take on a kind of spooky and haunting vibe. Again, those harmonies are absolutely untouchable. Simple and sparse arrangements, great songwriting and a feeling like no other. There is so much emotion in the way these two play together. It is magic.

There is a genuine sincerity to the way that the brothers sing and create together. This was what they were born to do…thank goodness they ended up being cut from the same clothe (genetically speaking). You can’t not like these guys. Everything about them is genuine and honest. They are the real deal and I expect very big things for The Meadows Brothers in the years to come…
