Album Feature Friday: Session Americana “Pack Up The Circus”

Session Americana is the type of band that is best served live. There is a very particular intimacy about the performances these gentlemen put forth in a show setting. Passing instruments, lead vocal duties, and whiskey around their table top. Sharing songs and swapping solos, having a friend from the audience jump in for a song or two. It’s an experience, its an institution of sorts. Their Lizard Lounge residences have become somewhat of a legend around town and rightfully so. Lucky for us, however, the boys managed to capture that same aura in their latest recording, “Pack Up The Circus”, so we can live out those moments from our own home, cars, or walking down Mass Ave.

The record contains much of that energy and vibe because it was recorded in a fashion that the boys know so well…mostly live with mininal overdubbing. I can only imagine how much fun this album was to create. With a list of incredible players too long too list joining the fellas

Ry Cavanaugh and Dinty Child’s gentle croons carry the weight of much of the vocal work here, and that’s just fine by me. The harmonies of the entire band and guests weaving into each other really build something powerful, fun, and it just feels HUGE. Jim Fitting’s harmonica defies logic…he just manages to play exactly the right parts at each and every turn. The guy just doesn’t play a bad note on that thing. And Billy Beard’s drum is the glue that really keeps everything in check. The host of characters playing everything from upright bass to the beautiful harmonies lended by artists like Anais Mitchell and Laura Cortese are sublime. This is a collective, a community…Session Americana isn;t just a band, its an experience. And that experience is captured wonderfully here on “Pack Up The Circus”.
