Track of the Week: Kate Hardly “Don’t Look at Him”

12249791_939508679463122_437026870042567711_nKate Hardly is a new-ish name on the music scene here in town, at least in the fashion of branching out on her own. She has seemingly flew under the radar until this new EP was just released a few weeks back. Sitting in with friend’s bands, lending her harmonies to other folks songs, and gracing the stage for a Shovels & Rope cover of a cover with one very lucky Boston based music journalist.

On her new EP “Here I Made You This”, the songwriter lays out in song a letter of sorts. Full of all types of emotion ranging from regret and self loathing on the somber, downtrodden “My Sorry Version of an Apology” to a more uptempo and driving “Tinderbox” (on which Hardly takes on a very Cary Ann Hearst type vibe in her attitude and delivery).

This week’s track of the week is “Don’t Look at Him” from that record. It has a submerged, encompassing kind of feeling to it. Indie pop rock, with a throbbing but subtle tube and her well controlled and soft vocal. What she does very well across this entire record is to portray feeling and emotion extremely well with the use of her passionate vocal work and also build the arrangements in way that carry you along, keep you engaged and listening, and resolve very well.
