Show You Should Know: Downbeat Mondays at The Plough and Stars

bar_hoursI’ve long been a fan of The Plough as a spot to play and take in tunes late night. It just has such a vibe to it. A comfortable room where you really are on top of the audience when you play, but it also has a layout where you can either sit in the back and enjoy the full room or be right up front for the live show experience. Another thing I love about this great venue is the food and the drinks. Great beer selection, all sorts of concoctions for hard liquor enthusiasts and an ever changing menu that never disappoints. And another thing I really I appreciate about the Plough is that most of the really fantastic shows there happen during the week. Case in point: Downbeat Mondays….

From the mouth (or fingers typed in an email from guitarist Matthew Stubbs):

Starting in January, the legendary Plough & Stars in Cambridge, MA has kicked off a new Monday night series called DOWNBEAT MONDAYS. The night is geared towards those who love the moody vibe of live throwback soul -garage-twang music, along with projected vintage & psychedelic visuals. This vibe and atmosphere creates an exciting new Monday night destination.

Sarah Jane Mulcrone curates a unique craft cocktail menu each week for the event. The drinks range from vintage classics to experimental creations, and are specially priced for the evening from $5-$7. There are also a variety of weekly beer and shot specials starting at $3.

Matthew Stubbs (Boston based guitarist for grammy award winning blues artist Charlie Musselwhite) and his band The Antiguas, have been enlisted as the Downbeat Mondays house band. The Antiguas play original throwback instrumentals, in the style of ‘verbed-out garage-soul-twang, with the occasional carefully chosen cover tune. The band features some of Boston’s favorite session and touring musicians, with Ken Clark on Farfisa organ, Marc Hickox on bass, Chris Rivelli on drums, Dave Fox & Chris Anzalone on percussion, and Stubbs on guitar. The live music is accompanied by a giant screen projection of vintage/psychedelic images throughout the night.

So, here is your reason to go out on a Monday night folks (as if you even needed one). Great music, great food, and great drinks at The Plough. Get on down!
