Show You Should Know: Gaelynn Lea at Passim Tonight (1/19)

This week may be a rough one for many of us, so heading out for some inspiration and hope is something we could all use (and a haunting and ambient palette of sound is a perfect backdrop for such). Lucky for you all NPR Tiny Desk Contest winner Gaelynn Lea will be performing at Passim tonight and providing just such an evening of music to warm your hearts and shake your soul. There is a vulnerability in the quiver of her voice as it floats about the intricate layers of loops she creates with her violin. Poignant and moving and beautiful. Steeped in tradition in many ways as she takes melodies from ages old tunes, but tweaks and develops them into her own sound.

More on the event:

Classically trained violinist and songwriter Gaelynn Lea is coming to Club Passim in Cambridge, MA to play a solo set of her haunting music on January 19th.

Gaelynn has been bewitching scores of fans with her experimental and ambient takes on fiddle music, an approach that incorporates her love of traditional tunes, songwriting, poetry and sonic exploration. Of her live performances, Gaelynn Lea said, “my aim is to create a meditative, layered sound that allows the listener’s mind to drift. “

Gaelynn’s work most recently won NPR Music’s Tiny Desk Contest in March of 2016, a competition drawing submissions of original songs from more than 6,000 musicians across the country. Gaelynn Lea’s musical reach quickly expanded because of the Tiny Desk Contest. She began touring nationally in September 2016, and in December 2016 she performed in Europe for the first time as support for Low’s Christmas tour. Now she is embarking on another national tour in early 2017, which brings her to the state of Massachusetts for her show at Club Passim.

“I am really excited to get back on the road to play,” says Gaelynn. “I had so much fun on our first national tour; we met a lot of wonderful people on the road. I am looking forward to seeing many of these folks again this time around, and meeting new people as well.”

This performance starts at 8pm. Tickets are $20 for non-members and free for members. They are available for advance purchase online athttps://tickets.passim.org/ ordertickets.asp?p=5623& backurl=default.asp
