I wrote this song the way I start writing a lot of my material — by fixating on one word, in this case, “shoebox.” It’s a good word, I think. I saw a shoebox in my mind’s eye and thought about why people might save one. We keep things in them — letters, photos, and yes, shoes. And then I thought about it poetically and symbolically. What else can we store away in shoeboxes? Dreams? Fears? Memories? I wanted to write about that in way that wasn’t trite or hackneyed. And that’s when the sparrow came to me, the little bird that represents everything that matters to us.
