Singled Out: Jubal “In the Time of Romans”

The is an undeniable Dylan-esque delivery to the vocals of Taylor Kress here on “In the Time of Romans”. But it is subtle. It isn’t necessarily straight ahead and all the time. Certain phrasings (time ain’t really nothing…) are reminiscent of certain songs from the king of songwriting, more Nashville Skyline than Freewheelin’. But thats where that comparison ends.

The track is layered in an almost mid-eastern vibe in some whats. The band’s psychedelic rock nature peering through a thin wafer of folk roots richness. Mixing country vibes with a tubey and dream-like trip of strings and slow drum hits. I feel like I could cozy up inside this song and it would comfort me to a wonderfully strange dream. Fantastic and calming all at the same time.

Who: Jubal

From: Knoxville, TN

Song: “In the Time of Romans”

Latest Record: “County Ball”

What About It: “To me, it’s mostly an ode to the death of courtship. Not the old fashioned sit on the porch type of courtship, but rather just the idea of dating as a whole. Things seem to move much faster now and with much less regard than even I realized. Which is why the reference to the Romans is the cornerstone of the song, cities used to burn over Romance.

The track changed immensely from it’s birth, especially with the instrumentation. It felt like it needed the tinge of electric guitars and the washy ending to bring it back to the idea of the record being a lapse in and out of sleep and dreaming in particular.“- Taylor Kress
