Peep This: Magen Tracy & the Missed Connections | “Fortune-Found Lover”

Magen Tracy has long been a mainstay in the Boston rock music community. Whether it is supporting other artists in their bands on keys and vocals or putting out her own music, she always adds a great deal to what she is injecting her creative voice into.

For Mother’s Day, Magen released a beautiful new song that is particularly timely and poignant for the day. A song penned by her mother. A song that exists where beauty and power intersect and live and thrive together.

She tells us, “My mother wrote songs, dozens of beautiful songs that I learned along with her favorite Joni Mitchell and Bob Dylan tunes as she taught me to play guitar. She wrote ‘Fortune-Found Lover’ for my father before I was born, and it’s one of the most perfect love songs I’ve ever heard. Over the years, I’ve performed this song at weddings and memorial services, and last June I enlisted the band to perform it for my own wedding. We were so taken with it that we decided to record it for posterity and include it on our forthcoming full-length album.

Because my mom’s song is different from the rest of the tunes on the album (though really not that different – we have a lot in common, including an inclination towards fire imagery and triple meter), I wanted to do something special to record it. Live recording felt like a great way to capture the experience we had as a band of listening to this older song, unpacking it, and arranging it to make it our own. It unfolded very organically, and the recording and filming of it happened much the same way.

She and the band took to the studio with cameras in tow to capture the special moments that uncoiled during the session.
