Singled Out: Ava Earl “Springtime”

A song called “Springtime” couldn’t come at a more opportune time. As the maples have budded out and are spreading their leaves, rustling in the ever warming breeze. Birds are back singing their songs, and here we are graced with a beautiful song from singer-songwriter Ava Earl. Ava’s voice lilting up and drifting down, like those aforementioned warm breezes, filling the gaps in the air with a soft but rich sound. The building of the track, with underpinned harmonies as she poises complete control of her voice, driving the narrative. Dancing around the instrumental adornments that decorate the edges of the track.  When the break hits just after the 2 minute mark, she really shines. Her voice a golden light shimmering in a peaceful reprieve until the rhythm picks back up again. It’s this balance that is always intriguing as a listener. An almost childlike wonder coupled with a singer who can move the air in front of their mouths with such elegance and power that it seems effortless. Ava Earl is going to be one to watch (and listen for). Keep an ear to the ground folks.

Who: Ava Earl

From: Girdwood, Alaska

Song: “Springtime”

What About It: “This is a song about returning light and joy. In Alaska, our winters are spent almost completely in the darkness, especially if (as is my case) you are in class or at work during the few hours of daylight. When spring comes around, the light returns pretty suddenly, and I always feel a rush of creativity and a return to myself. This song is about that––how I feel like a new person in the spring. To me, “Springtime” is a song that gives us some allowances for not always being the best versions of ourselves. Recording this song was a really beautiful process because it took this raw idea and music and created a whole atmosphere around it that really matched my initial feelings about the song. That was really amazing for me.”
