Meet the BIG RED Nominees: Favorite Local Male Songwriter Awards by Brian Carroll - November 3, 2014January 21, 20160 In an effort to be fair and unbiased, I just took people’s bios from their sites or online. It probably wouldn’t be fair if I gave my own rundown…so anyway, meet the nominees: Ian Fitzgerald- Though perhaps technically a singer-songwriter, Ian Fitzgerald prefers the term folk singer. While "singer-songwriter" carries with it the negative connotations brought on by too many over-emotive, heart-on-their-sleeve performers, "folk singer" points more accurately to the tradition in which Ian's music is rooted. From early twentieth century field recordings through Woody Guthrie, Hank Williams, Bob Dylan, Townes Van Zandt, Gillian Welch, and hundreds of artists in between, Ian has been influenced by one of the sturdiest strains of American music. http://www.ianfitzgerald.com/ Will Houlihan- Haunt the House comes from
2014 BIG REDs Recognitions Nominees… Awards by Brian Carroll - October 31, 2014January 21, 20160 Well, just under 200 individual people (or at least computers) from the Northeast music community weighed in and voiced their opinion. Is this the perfect way to recognize the music community we have around town? Of course not, but I think it's important that we have some form of recognition from our peers in the folk/roots/songwriter community in and around Camber-ville (and beyond). Before anyone goes off accusing Red of a conspiracy, know that the process is about as simple as you can make it. People take a survey, those results are pulled into a spreadsheet, counted up, and the 8 (except with Female Songwriter, with 9 as a 3 way tie occurred) names with the highest number of nominations
Boston Music Awards 2014 Nominations Announced… Awards by Brian Carroll - October 7, 2014January 21, 20160 Say what you will..."so and so wasn't on the list" or "they aren't even living in Boston any more", this year's BMA noms have come leaps and bounds from previous year's in this humble writer's opinion. To see folks like Dan Blakeslee, Joe Fletcher, Nate Leavitt and Lake Street Dive (yes, even if they don't 'live' here...its been a banner year for those guys and we should be damn proud and happy for them here in Beantown) is an absolutely undeniable step in the right direction from previous nods to Aerosmith (let's beat that dead horse til its alive, and then dead again) and giving the awards back to the people. Hell, I can even put on a smile for

Your 2013 BIG RED Recognition Choices Are… Awards by Brian Carroll - December 12, 2013January 21, 20160 This process was cut from the fabric of this music community. Your peers and fans nominated you (the musician) and you put out the word for those same people to cast their opinion forth on the survey. I had little to nothing to do with this aside from setting up a survey for that information to be entered into and then typing these results into a blog post. I mean it when I say I hate calling the below list the "winners" because I truly feel what makes OUR music community so much more unique and special than other regions is the support and love that we have throughout it. So, 'your choices', yeah, winners, yeah they are that too,
Big Red Voting Closed and Update on What’s Next… Awards by Brian Carroll - December 9, 2013January 21, 20160 Well, all good things must come to an end, and sometimes they end a whole hell of a lot quicker than we anticipate. As I mentioned in the nominee announcement post, there was a limited number of votes and everyone could only vote once. Luckily "one vote per IP address" is an option that seemingly works, unluckily (depending on how you look at it) these votes came FLYING in real quick. I think that is a testament to the support and wonderful people in this community. Not just the artists, musicians, and clubs but also the people out supporting local music this town. You all have re-established my faith in keeping the local arts thriving. Now down to the business end
And the Polls Are Open… Awards by Brian Carroll - December 2, 2013January 21, 20160 Hey all,Well, the polls are finally open for the Red Line Roots recognition awards. https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/redlinerootsHere are the rules:-Please limit your voting to ONE TIME ONLY...at least per computer. Big brother is in fact watching and any duplicate IP addresses will be thrown out anyway. Ahhh, technology is grand. So please don't waste the time and/or votes. I want to keep this thing as fair as possible and having your mom vote for you 150 times just ain't fair!-The poll has a limited number of votes, which is why it is important to only vote once. Again, it may seem ridiculous or whatever, but please only vote one time per person. Everyone has an equal voice in this community...plus, I asked nicely.-DO,
And the Nominees Are… Awards by Brian Carroll - November 25, 2013November 17, 20170 I just want to put a HUGE thank you out there to everyone who gave me their feedback and nominated their friends and colleagues for this whole ordeal. It has been wonderful to see musicians and fans come forward to support each other. Every single person/band on this list and the people who nominated them are already winners in my book.Voting will be up a bit later this week, but in a feeble effort to generate some more excitement, I wanted to release the nominees today. You know, so you have something to talk about over Thanksgiving and what not. So please, share if you or a fellow friend is on the list below and lets get people amped up
A Note Regarding “The BIG RED” Recognitions Awards by Brian Carroll - November 25, 2013January 21, 20160 I was sitting at Toad over the weekend enjoying some truly fine music from some great musicians and was thinking to myself, I really wish I could just let everyone in the world know about ALL of the wonderful musicians from this city. I wish I could make it my life’s work to cast a light upon those musicians who are out rocking every night for 17 bucks and a beer, the songwriter who you won’t hear on the radio but writes incomparably better than 90% of the garbage you will likely hear on terrestrial radio, and those people who live for collaborating and creating a space for people to just “feel” the music. I wish that I could
