Video Premiere: “Cast Iron Kettle,” Joseph Terrell Featured Videos Music Features by Ken Templeton - March 8, 2023March 8, 20230 Joseph Terrell (Mipso) recently announced his debut album, Good For Nothing Howl, on Sleepy Cat Records, set for release on May 5. We are thrilled to premiere the video for, “Cast Iron Kettle,” the first single. Joseph wrote about the process for this record. He said, “i quit trying to write all together, quit playing for a while too. then at the beginning of spring i started dragging a chair under a tree in the yard. wherever i was i would try to spend the morning outside with a guitar. i found a lot of songs that way, like they were already there, waiting for me to sing them out loud. i hope that sounds as strange as it felt.” On “Cast
Peep This: The Promise is Hope Premieres “Brother” Video Featured Videos Interviews Music Features by Brian Carroll - May 4, 20180 The Promise is Hope is a New England based indie-folk duo. Their songs are lined with rich vocal harmonies, often times interweaving into one collective and solitary sound of 2 guitars and 2 voices. With their sophomore release on the horizon in the next few weeks we caught up with the to talk about a brand new video for the song "Brother" off of that album. The performance of the song itself is simple. A live take of two acoustic guitars, two vocals in an empty old church. Sparsity seems to be the key and it would seem that in terms of the choices for this particular video it was really important for the group to let the song breath. Eric L'Esperance said
Lula Wiles on Modern Ballads “Wide River” : An Interview with Isa Burke and Video Premiere Featured Videos Interviews Music Features by Brian Carroll - April 20, 2018April 20, 20180 A few months back we highlighted a special project curated by GennaRose Nethercott (the full album that actually releases today!) the idea of which was that as a poet, she had a handle on crafting words and prose in beautiful fashion, but alas she was not as much of a singer as some of her friends around the area. And when looking for musicians and beautiful voices, Somerville/Cambridge sure as heck isn't a bad place to be. Fast forward and the project nears completion and one of our favorite groups just so happens to be involved in the whole thing, Lula Wiles. We caught up with Isa Burke to talk about their involvement in "Modern Ballads", working with GennaRose and of course premiere
The Way It Goes: A Conversation with Hawthorn Featured Videos Interviews Music Features by Brian Carroll - April 6, 2018April 6, 20180 The women of Hawthorn were recently up in Vermont and took a spin by the old homestead to film a few things, drink some tea and talk about music and life. We set up some mics and as the mid afternoon haze on a chilly winter day set into our upstairs they performed this beautiful song for my lens. I have been humming it in my head, often unknowingly, ever since. Some songs just have that weight that sits with you long after their audible presence in time fades. It wasn't until I spoke with Taylor and Heather about the song that it really hit me. The words cut a bit deeper. The meaning of the song and the impact
Peep This: Sarah Hubbard “Precious Metals” (Lorde violin cover) Featured Videos Music Features by Brian Carroll - March 21, 2018March 21, 20180 OK, Lorde may not be something you would expect to be covered or mentioned here on RLR, but when fiddler extraordinaire Sarah Hubbard puts her mind to work on a multi-layered, cross cutting video cover of any tune its time to perk up and take notice. Recently referred to as the "fiery fairy of the strings" in a review of a Flobots show, when she isn't performing back bends on stage while lighting her fingerboard on fire, she puts out videos every so often. Ones that may not necessarily be traditional fits for a fiddle and a voice but she executes them flawlessly and with a certain intrigue that captivates fully. Check out her take on 'Precious Metals' below and keep an eye
Peep This: Hawthorn and Eleanor Elektra Collaborate on “Northwest Passage” Featured Videos Music Features by Brian Carroll - March 14, 20180 A few weeks back the duo of Hawthorn (Heather Scott, Taylor Holland) and Eleanor Elektra made their way up our skating rink of a drive way in their Prius. It wasn't the easiest of treks but they persevered and warmed themselves by the wood stove, had a bit of tea and then of course, we filmed a bunch of songs. The first of which was a collaboration between the two artists on an acapella version of Stan Rogers' "Northwest Passage". As they harmonized between the bending branches of the pines and swaying maples, the birds chimed in every so often to sing along. Check it out below and keep an eye on both Hawthorn and Eleanor in the coming months for
Peep This: Hawktail “Abbzug” Featured Videos Music Features by Brian Carroll - March 7, 20180 Over this past weekend I had the pleasure of filming some things with Jordan Tice of Hawktail and catching him play a duo house concert with dobro player Mike Witcher. We talked a little about the band formerly known as Haas, Kowert Tice (now Hawktail) and the new record...and also this video. A gorgeous original instrumental by the band shot inside of Downtown Presbyterian Church in Nashville. The full band is nothing short of fine tuned authority on each of their individual instruments, but in this particular case Brittany Haas proves again that she is a damn national treasure. A new record is on the horizon for the band, so keep a keen eye out on their website and be sure to
Peep This: Bob Bradshaw “My Double and I” Featured Videos Music Features by Brian Carroll - March 2, 20180 A quick look at Boston based singer-songwriter Bob Bradshaw's Youtube channel and you will see that he is a big fan of something we don't get all too often these day: the concept video. With vibes ranging from the noir and 'Fear and Loathing'-esque back desert tapestry of "Crazy Heart" to the indie movie styled backseat cab ride of "Call it What you Will", the thought, style and detail he puts into these visual story-telling versions of his songs, well its just not something you see much of these days with artists opting for live video takes of tunes. Perhaos something that isn't quite as narrative in its approach as Bob's. A visionary? A renaissance man? I think a little
Fresh Track: Samantha Farrell ftr. Dennis Brennan “Lost Without Your Love” Featured Track Featured Videos Music Features by Brian Carroll - February 23, 2018February 23, 20180 The calm bowing of an orchestral din enters a dark frame and the voice of Samantha Farrell , soon after, knocks you a bit off balance as an endless tank reverberated guitar slowly treads along beneath it. There is a playful youthfulness in her vocal, but yet its infused with such vast experience in the delivery of each phrasing. The verging of the two opposing ideas melding in a brilliant formulation of sound. A sophistication that is fine scotch poured from a cross hatched crystal decanter. Steeped in a room smelling of vanilla cigar smoke and floor to ceiling deep velvet drapes. Seductive but self assured and comforting. Refined but high spirited and buoyant. Sure, its jazz. Its noir. It has a
Peep This: I’m With Her “Game to Lose” Featured Videos Music Features by Brian Carroll - February 16, 20180 I didn't think it possible to experience a visual as breathtakingly beautiful as the audible euphoria of I'm With Her's harmonies...but, then this video came along. Speaking purely from a 'videographer geeking out point of view', the latest effort from the trio is absolutely stunning. It has that gorgeous coloration and filmic look that only happens on a slightly cloudy day, sun peeking through every so gently, diffused in smooth smoke. Striking and you cannot look away. The music, well we have said it a number of times before: but this is it folks. All of what makes you feel in music and art is encompassed in a band with I'm With Her. Its hard to believe the trio's release (today's release that is)
