Locals Covering Locals V2 Artist: Connor Millican Locals Covering Locals by Brian Carroll - September 24, 2014January 21, 20160 Before time passes on and gets too close to October 5th when we hit the studio, I wanted to announce the final artist who will be in the studio that day. He should be familiar to you all by now, as he is September’s Artist of the Month and a good friend of mine (plus one hell of a songwriter), Mr. Connor Millican. Connor’s delivery and his attitude in his performance is unrivaled. Hanging out with him off of a stage, talking, or working on a project he is mild tempered, almost quiet and choosey with how many words he gets in. But on stage, he is a force to be reckoned with. His songs are story telling at their very
Locals Covering Locals V2 Artist: Hayley Sabella Locals Covering Locals by Brian Carroll - September 22, 2014January 21, 20160 Sometimes when you meet a person for the first time you are struck with a feeling. A kind of a feeling that there is just something about this person that is special. You aren’t quite sure what it is at first. I was playing a songwriters night in Cambridge called “the 9”, where nine different songwriters from the area play an evening of music together. Of the name’s on the bill that night I didn’t know anyone’s music except for my mandolin brother, Forrest O’Connor and fiddle extraordinaire and folk pop songstress, Eva Walsh. That left 6 other folks I didn’t know and hadn’t heard. I, naturally, got there early did my awkward, brooding songwriter thing but then gravitated towards
Locals Covering Locals V2 Artist: Jake Hill Locals Covering Locals by Brian Carroll - September 16, 2014January 21, 20160 Today is a very special day as we don’t just announce another Locals Covering Locals artist for volume 2, but it also just so happens to be this big man’s birthday. I first came across Jake Hill when I was booking a Sunday Night series at Church about 6 or 7 years back. We fought to get Jake involved and he kept having to back out…I’ll be honest, I was like “what the hell is up with this guy? I just love his tunes and want him to play”. I then lost touch with Hill’s music until he released “Hotel By The Side Of the Road” in 2011 and then his children’s record “All the Voices of the Forest” in 2012.
Locals Covering Locals V2 Artist: Michael Poulopoulos Locals Covering Locals by Brian Carroll - September 8, 2014January 21, 20160 Today, I would like to introduce you all to another artist from the Locals Covering Locals Volume 2 project. That man is Michael Poulopoulos…who could also be heard under the moniker M.R. Poulopoulos or Rebel Darling. I came to know Mike through Club Passim. We were scheduled to have an In The Round set at last Memorial Day’s campfire festival and I listened to some of his music so offered him a gig the night before at Toad. Well, needless to say his songs blew me away. Just give a listen to some of them and you will also be an immediate fan, but the fact that he is also a hell of a guitar player and able to lead a
Locals Covering Locals Volume 2 Artist: Jeff Byrd Locals Covering Locals by Brian Carroll - September 2, 2014January 21, 20160 Occasionally you befriend someone that you cannot even remember the first time that you met them. It isn’t because that person is forgettable, or even that the circumstance in which you met was. The reason you forget the first time you met is because it simply feels like you have known that person forever regardless of the actual duration. Something just clicks and even if you don’t get to see each other every week, or make music and gig together regularly it still just feels right when you do. Jeff Byrd is one of the very few people I feel that way about. A couple years? A handful of gigs every year? It doesn’t matter because when I do see
Locals Covering Locals V2 Artist: Will Houlihan Locals Covering Locals by Brian Carroll - August 26, 2014January 21, 20160 Every so often a songwriter comes along that injects you with a feeling that is incomparable to what most of the songs out there are able to do in this day and age. Sure, there are songs you can bob your head to, or tap your feet, or even songs that are so well written they stick with you for a while. Then there are songs that are presented in such a way that they burrow deep underneath your skin and take root inside of your veins. They keep digging each time you hear them until you can feel them creaking inside of your bone marrow and the only way to get rid of the tension is to hear them
20 Reasons to Come to Passim on July 5th for Locals Covering Locals Locals Covering Locals by Brian Carroll - July 2, 2014January 21, 20160 20 Reasons to come to the show July 5th and get your copy of “Locals Covering Locals”... 1) Will Houlihan’s song “Vampyre” is one of the most gorgeous songs ever written. 2) Ian Fitzgerald’s version is equally as moving as the original…and he sings harmony vocals on top of his own vocals on the recording. The guy is incredible...and the song is spooky as shit! 3) Secret Sounds by Allison Francis is a heck of a sing along tune. You can all sing along with us and rejoice! 4) Eva Walsh plays fiddle, guitar, AND sings on the one track…plus her partner in covering crime Mark Whitaker will be there. Plus Eva Walsh makes everyone who crosses her path smile. 5) Noam Weinstein is one
Locals Covering Locals: Fitzsimmons, Scudder and Larkin Cover Klyma/Byrd Locals Covering Locals by Brian Carroll - June 27, 2014January 21, 20160 I owe a lot to Ryan Fitzsimmons. If I am being quite frank, I may owe the fact that I am still writing songs and playing them out at decent venues to him. When I first moved back to town from college in Delaware I struggle to find gigs, I hosted an acoustic Americana night at a rock club, I played shitty downtown Boston bars that required 98% cover songs (essentially, I could play half of an original, if I snuck it into the middle of “Glory Days” and it was in the same key), and was generally unhappy. Ryan invited me down to Providence to play an all acoustic, no mics, no electricity show at AS220 and that night
Locals Coverings Locals: Patrick Coman Covers Tim Gearan Locals Covering Locals by Brian Carroll - June 26, 2014January 21, 20160 Many, many people approached me about contributing to the Locals Covering Locals project when I first announced it. Most of the messages ran the gamet from “Hey, I would love you to be on this” to “Hey, I think you should pick me, I f'ing rock”. One person shot me a quick message along the lines of “Hey man, you know I’d love to contribute any way that I can or just come and hang out with you guys at the studio.” That person was Patrick and is one of the reasons why he has become such a good friend. He gives so much of his heart to building and furthering the community here in town with his For The
Locals Covering Locals: Eva Walsh Covers Allison Francis Locals Covering Locals by Brian Carroll - June 24, 2014January 21, 20160 While it may seem egotistical on my own part, I am going to quote myself to introduce this next Locals Covering Locals act… “I will say this about Eva's fiddle playing, she is the most tasteful musician I have had the pleasure of playing with. She knows exactly what to play, when to play it and never overdoes it. That, on top of the fact that she always has a smile on her face...". I could end why I asked Ms. Walsh to be a part of this project right there, but I won’t. The very first time I met Eva was by chance, I suppose. I had met Mark Whitaker (who plays banjo on this track) at an in the round gig,
