Singled Out: Olivia Frances “Cocoon”

Olivia Frances’ voice soars. Dodging crosswinds and piercing through clouds as it ebbs and flows like a warm summer breeze. There is something completely refreshing about that voice and its on full display on “Cocoon”. Swooping over the steady pick of an acoustic guitar. Sparse and airy, letting the singer-songwriter’s voice fully saturate the landscape of the song. It’s that place where the catchiness of pop meets the sentimentality of folk and roots.

Who: Olivia Frances

From: Cincinnati, OH

Song: ‘Cocoon’

Latest Record: Orchid

What About It: ‘’Cocoon’’ is an acoustic folk/pop song-like-lullaby about growing up.  It’s to serve as a reminder to little girls and girls of all ages to be brave and ‘’come out of your cocoon’’ or be yourself, even when it may be hard to do so.

While writing this song, I thought back to my middle school days, which were filled with lots of up’s and down’s. When you’re 13 or 14, it’s easy to want to fit in and lose sight of who you are. I wanted to write a song that I would’ve wanted to hear back then.

I co-wrote this song with Michael Astrachan over Skype. It was recorded at Northfire Recording Studio in Amherst, MA and was mixed and mastered by Pat Lassiter at Riverfront Recording Studios. It was the last song that was recorded for my third full-length, fan-funded album, Orchid.
