Singled Out: Louien “I Follow You”

Ethereal. Dream scape. Deep blue and faded hues of hauntingly gorgeous layers. Those are the visuals that “I Follow You” by Louien makes dance across the back of my eyelids when I close my eyes and listen. Dive into the depths she has created here on this track and let it wash over you.

Song: “I Follow You”

Latest Album: None Of My Words (Jansen Records, Sep 20)

What About It: “This song was written quite a few years ago. I was going through my twenties, and they seemed to last forever. I remember waking up one morning and looking out of my bedroom window – the trees, grass, cars; everything was covered in a thin layer of snow – it must have been the first snowfall that year. And I was carried away with emotion, spiralling out of control, because everything changes and there is nothing one can do about it. I wanted for things to stay the way they were but had no say in what nature decided to do. This song describes how emotions sometimes control my life, maybe most of the time, really, both negative and positive, and how they sometimes draw me away from myself and leave me empty and without direction.

Sometimes you need a gentle push in the right direction by someone who understands where you’re at. Recording this song felt like such a release. I wasn’t sure if it was going to be on the record, but the way my producer Øyvind interpreted it just solved everything for me. The harmonies, the strings – it just turned out exactly how I wanted it to, even though I might not have known where I wanted to go with it in the first place. It became the natural first track on the album, and somehow it all came full circle, as it was the first song I wrote with a solo album in mind.”
